## Database Schema Alignment

The Contact API now fully aligns with the new database schema:

```sql
CREATE TABLE users (
  id INT PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT,
  name VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL,
  rank_id INT,
  service_no VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL UNIQUE,
  unit_id INT NOT NULL,
  department_id INT,  -- NEW: Connected to departments table
  role_id INT NOT NULL DEFAULT 3,
  designation_id INT NOT NULL,
  phone VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
  mobile VARCHAR(20),
  alternative_mobile VARCHAR(20),
  email VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL UNIQUE,
  avatar VARCHAR(500),
  status ENUM('online','offline','busy') DEFAULT 'offline',
  last_seen TIMESTAMP,
  password_hash VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL,
  parent_id INT,  -- Self-referencing for unlimited hierarchy
  is_active TINYINT(1) DEFAULT 1,
  created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,
  updated_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP ON UPDATE CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,
  -- contact_type field REMOVED
  FOREIGN KEY (unit_id) REFERENCES units(id),
  FOREIGN KEY (department_id) REFERENCES departments(id),
  FOREIGN KEY (designation_id) REFERENCES designations(id),
  FOREIGN KEY (parent_id) REFERENCES users(id)
);
```

---

## Hierarchy Structure

### New Organizational Flow

```
Units (with parent_id)
  └─> Departments (connected via unit_id)
      └─> Users (connected via unit_id and department_id)
          └─> Users (via parent_id)
              └─> Users (unlimited depth)
                  └─> ...
```

### Example Hierarchy

```
Naval Headquarters (Unit)
  └─> CNS Department
      └─> Admiral (Unit Commander, parent_id: null)
          └─> Captain (Dept Head, parent_id: Admiral)
              └─> Commander (Team Lead, parent_id: Captain)
                  └─> Lieutenant (Officer, parent_id: Commander)
                      └─> ... (unlimited nesting)
```

---

## Statistics Updates

### Before (with contact_type):
```json
{
  "total_contacts": 100,
  "internal_contacts": 80,
  "external_contacts": 20,
  "root_contacts": 10,
  "child_contacts": 90
}
```

### After (without contact_type):
```json
{
  "total_contacts": 100,
  "root_contacts": 10,
  "child_contacts": 90,
  "super_admins": 1,
  "admins": 5,
  "regular_users": 94,
  "total_units": 7,
  "total_departments": 22
}
```

---

## Backward Compatibility Notes

### Breaking Changes
1. **`contact_type` removed** - Any frontend code using this field must be updated
2. **Required fields changed** - `unit_id`, `service_no`, `designation_id`, `phone`, `email` are now required
3. **Branch endpoints** - `/api/contacts/branch/:branchId` now uses `department_id` internally

### Non-Breaking Changes
1. **Routes unchanged** - All endpoint URLs remain the same
2. **Response structure** - Similar, just added new fields
3. **Authentication** - No changes to auth mechanism

## Migration Checklist

If migrating from the old Contact API:

- [ ] Update create/edit forms to include `department_id` field
- [ ] Make `service_no`, `designation_id`, `phone`, `email` required in forms
- [ ] Update filter components to use `department_id` instead of `contact_type`
- [ ] Update statistics displays to show department counts
- [ ] Test user creation with new required fields
- [ ] Test department filtering
- [ ] Update any stored queries/filters that used `contact_type`
- [ ] Update documentation and user guides
- [ ] Run database migration to add `unit_id` to departments table
- [ ] Run database migration to remove `contact_type` from users table

---

## Testing Recommendations

### Unit Tests
1. Test contact creation with department_id
2. Test contact creation without department_id (should work)
3. Test filtering by department_id
4. Test statistics without contact_type
5. Test validation for required fields

### Integration Tests
1. Test full user hierarchy creation (5+ levels deep)
2. Test department filtering across units
3. Test search with department filters
4. Test moving users between departments
5. Test organizational hierarchy endpoint

### API Tests
```bash
# Create contact with department
POST /api/contacts
{
  "name": "Test User",
  "service_no": "BN99999",
  "unit_id": 1,
  "department_id": 1,
  "designation_id": 1,
  "phone": "+880211119999",
  "email": "test@navy.mil.bd"
}
# Get contacts by department
GET /api/contacts?unit_id=1&department_id=1&tree=true
# Search within department
GET /api/contacts/search?q=Test&department_id=1
```
