## Testing Recommendations

### Unit Tests to Write
1. Unit CRUD operations
2. Unit tree structure building
3. Parent-child relationship validation
4. Code uniqueness validation
5. Deletion with dependencies check

### Integration Tests to Write
1. Complete workflow: Create unit → department → users
2. User hierarchy creation (5+ levels)
3. Filter and search operations
4. Statistics accuracy
5. Permission-based access control

### API Test Examples

```bash
# Create Unit
POST /api/units
{
  "name": "Test Unit",
  "code": "TEST-001",
  "description": "Test unit description"
}
# Create Department
POST /api/departments
{
  "name": "Test Department",
  "unit_id": 1,
  "description": "Test department"
}
# Create User
POST /api/users
{
  "name": "Test User",
  "service_no": "TEST-999",
  "unit_id": 1,
  "department_id": 1,
  "designation_id": 1,
  "phone": "+880211119999",
  "email": "test@test.com",
  "password": "test123"
}
# Get Units Tree
GET /api/units?tree=true
# Get Departments by Unit
GET /api/departments/unit/1
# Get Users with Filters
GET /api/users?unit_id=1&department_id=1&role_id=3
```

---

## Performance Considerations

1. **Indexing**: All foreign keys are indexed
2. **Pagination**: Default limit of 50 items
3. **Joins**: Optimized LEFT JOINs for related data
4. **Caching**: Consider implementing Redis for statistics
5. **Query Optimization**: Use indexes on search fields

---

## Future Enhancements

### Potential Additions
1. Bulk operations (create/update/delete multiple)
2. Import/export functionality (CSV, Excel)
3. Audit logging for all operations
4. File upload for user avatars
5. Advanced search with multiple filters
6. Sorting options (by name, date, etc.)
7. Real-time notifications
8. User activity tracking
9. Department transfer history
10. Hierarchical permissions (inherit from parent)

---

## Integration with Existing APIs

The new APIs work seamlessly with existing Contact API:
- Contact API: Uses users table (same as Users API)
- Contacts can be filtered by unit and department
- Full compatibility maintained
- No breaking changes to existing endpoints

---

## Migration from Old System

If migrating from a system without unit_id in departments:

```sql
-- Add unit_id to departments
ALTER TABLE departments
ADD COLUMN unit_id INT NOT NULL AFTER name;
ALTER TABLE departments
ADD CONSTRAINT departments_ibfk_1
FOREIGN KEY (unit_id) REFERENCES units(id) ON DELETE RESTRICT;
-- Update existing departments with appropriate unit_id
UPDATE departments SET unit_id = 1 WHERE id > 0;
```

```bash
# Routes are already added to src/server.js
# No additional configuration needed
```

### 2. Create Your First Unit
```javascript
const response = await fetch('/api/units', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
    'Content-Type': 'application/json',
    'Authorization': 'Bearer YOUR_TOKEN'
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    name: 'My Unit',
    code: 'MY-UNIT-01',
    description: 'My first unit'
  })
});
```

### 3. Create a Department
```javascript
const response = await fetch('/api/departments', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
    'Content-Type': 'application/json',
    'Authorization': 'Bearer YOUR_TOKEN'
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    name: 'My Department',
    unit_id: 1,
    description: 'My first department'
  })
});
```

### 4. Create a User
```javascript
const response = await fetch('/api/users', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
    'Content-Type': 'application/json',
    'Authorization': 'Bearer YOUR_TOKEN'
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    name: 'John Doe',
    service_no: 'JD-001',
    unit_id: 1,
    department_id: 1,
    designation_id: 1,
    phone: '+1234567890',
    email: 'john@example.com',
    password: 'secure_password'
  })
});
```
